Facebook

It was with much pleasure that I dismantled my facebook account today.

I have felt for some time that I was not seeing much benefit from it, that its management concerned me, that younger peoples behavior on it was not too good.

With a recent murder of a young woman by someone she met on facebook, I am beginning to see more negatives than positives.

I wonder just how long I will keep blogging too, as the Google van drives past to take photos, and they ask if they can identify my location....

Perhaps the beginning of "Big Brother"? I wonder what your thoughts are on these "social" sites? Just how comfortable are you?

  1. I am seriously considering getting rid of Facebook too, though I know it will mean I won't see some peoples' photos any more. And I will miss playing lexulous with Lorenzo! But I am getting tired of trying to keep one step ahead of FB's ever increasing invasions of my privacy.

  2. I agree Kiwi- its a subtle thing but I have really begun to notice it. I am even thinking of getting rid of my web site for my business. If people want to talk to me that can email or phone....

  3. I've only just joined Facebook - it's great to reconnect, but hardly ever on it - a bit of a drag. Google has already got Shetland googlified - did last summer. As for blog - know what you mean - I'm out there now and nothing much I can do and I do love blogging. Hope you don't stop either. Big Brother already has all your information - I'm not sure what the answer is...

  4. i still see the positives, altho am conscious of the not-so positives. to me, certain connections are still worth it... and, with that being said, i proceed with awareness.

  5. good points! I also had a drama with a guy one of my duaghters met on facebook. Took ages to resolve it. So I find it has a tarnished record.

I enjoy blogging as I see it as more of a diary

  6. HI Simon
Well I never did go down the Facebook path and don't think I ever will.. it's time consuming enough to keep up with blogging.. As I have never put my surname on my blog .. hopefully my private business will remain just so....

I don't think I could stop blogging now.. and hope you don't either... You made me laugh.. I was trying to channel a Deano era in those images.. so glad it worked for you!!! hahaha xx Julie

  8. Hi Julie- I agree 100% with what you have done re facebook and blogging.

As for Deano- you should you tube him..he is utterly "smashed" when he sings it!

  9. Mine is all gone now too Simon... and the only regret I have is no more lexulous with Lorenzo!! The 'clincher' for me leaving, in addition to the privacy stuff, was the foul language that I was having to endure in the 'questions' section on my sidebar.... and I was unable to delete it...

  11. Hahaha the Chinese spammer has visited you too. Annoying these ones cos they seem to get past the word verification and all. I have switched to moderation for the time being, just for his/her flummoxing!

  14. okeydokey..... have to be honest here.... have a fake alter ego with a brand spanking new gmail with no contacts in it, and thus I will be able to keep playing lexulous! And nobody else will find me!!!

  15. Hi Kiwi- I haven't tried the links. I am too suspicious especially if the computer is used for banking...

  16. I tried them a few times Simon. and now I just delete those kind of comments as soon as they appear.
I guess I have a Mac so I wasn't too worried about the links from that point of view :-)

  17. Hi Mate, I use Facebook to keep in touch with my former students, especially Maalie Courtiers. I don't spend as much time on it as I used to do and I have all my security settings set to 'maximum'.

  18. I have no problems with FB but then I use it mostly to see what my friends around the world is up to and to keep in touch. I never put any photos, nor do I write anything too personal. I even use Twitter but very much less so nowadays as I find it too time consuming and people are pretty boring and self-promotional there which gets on my nerves.
Don't stop blogging Simon, I'd miss you!

  19. Hi Jim- yes I understand that it does have benefits. for me its not just those who can/cannot read it. Its more about giving information to facebook which is run by people I dont know.

Hi Ilva- thanks! No I like blogging although I have had to turn on the comments moderation.
