This is a Lyre bird tail feather. I found it along the track I was riding. To see it in real life..well, it's just beautiful. About 45cm long and feels like spider web!
What a marvellously graphic image of a filoplume. As you can see, there are no barbs along the rachis and the feather has evidently evolved for display rather than for light or insulation.
Will you keep it so I can see it when (if I ever manage to) I come visit? It's gorgeous.
I have always been in the habit of picking up discarded feathers.I love how the overall structure is a replica of each individual line. I don't know the words like Maalie does!
Now are you sure it's from a Lyre bird? Not a lot of people know this, but if you find a white feather, it means an angel dropped it. That is one fine feather and it could be from an angel's primary.
Anon:- They certainly are! I was bush walking and someone was throwing rocks at us from a rock ledge, or so I thought. It was really anoying..so I snuck around and found it to be a Lyre bird scratching in debris on a rock shelf!
Simon, our Maalie was on the telly last night. I was forced, obviously to write a post on it. That makes two postings in two days. I would like to have your comments on Maalie on Telly. Lorenzo.
Oh we have lots of birthdays here too (productions and picnics and parties and *sigh*) ... apologies for lack of email which will arrive ... later! Happy Birthday if yours is within next few weeks Simon!!
