Breakfast with a Diamond Python

I like living in the mountains because you just never know who might drop in for a morning cup of coffee. Over the years we have had a wide variety of animals eg Wallabies, snakes, lizards and birds. We have had a resident Diamond Python for over two years. "Monty" is a part of the family. She lives in the roof of our home and is often found in the gardens, in the hedges or on the back deck.(see photos)

We never seem to have a mouse, rat or possum, problem here. Not only that, but she provides a great education for my children, who have grown to respect the bush, the insects and wildlife.

So, a cup of coffee on the deck, as the sun rises, with Monty.....

  2. Nice to hear yours and Rosalie's voices! There is a European Eagle called the Short-toed Eagle that eats snakes (I think you may have seen one when you came) and I'm sure a number of African ones also do.

  3. Hi Mate! actualyy its Davids! I get them mixed up when I phone home!

  4. That's a beautiful snake! And so big. So if she had got very unhappy with the camera being so close, what would she have done? Disappeared or something more sinister?

  5. She's really cute, but that facial expression of her,
that's me before tea in the morning.
Have you ever thought she might want to try come coffee???

  6. Ooops! Apologies to David. I might have guessed it was him, asking about what might eat it. The runcible fellow!

  7. HAHA, I guess you would have to know Monty well to be able to tell she wasn't happy with the camera :) At least she didn't wrap around you like a snack to go with morning tea!

  8. Hi!!

Ilva! LOVE your recipes!!!! Well if you look close at her neck you can see she has set herself up to strike.. her tongue was flickering as she tried to smell me... she is quite relaxed once she knows who we are.... :o)

Merisi! really?! I am the same... BUT its coffee for me... Yes. Its strange- when I trim the hedges sometimes I have to move her. She is now 2 metres in length and as strong as a strong guys arm!

Jim! Dave is Runcible for sure! He wants to do biology at uni- so lets hope we ( you and me etc ) can encourage him!

Anon-you are right 100% I can tell for sure. She is now big enough to eat a chicken whole or a small dog... but placid.

I have told the neighbours about her and asked that they call me if they find her in their place ( I worry for real she might be found).... I find her living here a real "gift". (If that makes sense)

  9. >I find her living here a real "gift". (If that makes sense)

Yes, that would be right. It's a gift from God, who made all creatures great and small. It was sent as a gift from God to remind you never to eat an apple. At least not when a sheila is around.

Look after it. Remember that its ancestors made it all the way to Noah's Ark in the Middle East and back so that it could be saved from the flood. Treat it with respect.

Yes Simon, I agree with Maalie. Treat it respect and listen carefully when it gives you instructions.

  16. Yes the tools have a sheen of oil/grease on them so the previous owner appears to have taken care of them. The cantilever toolbox works nicely too. I am just so thrilled to have found them! They won't be much use for my car as it's a Ford, but they'll be beaut for the Morrie.

  17. all tools are useful! Morrie... what ?? a Morris 1000??? that you can put the Austin healy engine in and disk brakes that look like a little Holden FJ????

  18. Ha ha, I get the feeling people just looked at the pictures and didn't read the last paragraph!!!

My Dad has a Morris Freeway, in the US I believed this was an Austin Freeway. They are quite similar in body to the Woosley.
    Dad's has an MG gearbox?!

  22. I have something in my roof -periodically anyway. Not sure whether I would prefer it to be a rat (a very big one at that) or a possum - maybe your beautiful friend could come and have a holiday for a few weeks :-)

  23. Simon, I just had this thought occur; does Monty ever slip away for ... you know ... romance? Do you think you might be introduced a group of Monty's little pythons some day? Would that be cool or what?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mountain girl! G'day!

If its a "slower" more ponderous sound then its a possum. If its a bit more scratchy its a rat ( you might hear munching sounds too as rats cannot help but to tear up things for the nest...

Yes! I could bring Monty around :o)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nancy! Monty is large enough to eat or scare a cat ( at least she scares ours) Even our fox terrier which kills poisonous snakes is a little nervous)

Lin:- Oh yes it would be very cool indeed! She does go walk/slither about !

    P.s. Mountain girl:- welcome BTW!
